Here is the exact model of knife that Les Stroud uses on his show SurvivorMan. It’s the Buck 119 Special, and it’s absolutely loaded with history and nostalgia. But is it a “good” knife? Let’s start with the specs.

I like store bought knives but being a blacksmith I can make the same exact thing cheeper and better made. The 119 is a good desing, I think I will make one soon.
buck is my favorate brand….i don’t even have buckteeth
@jabara83 That’s true.
@crockagater really now? i saw mainly japanese last time i went there but i could be wrong.
@jabara83 that may be but if you go to their website, they clearly say made in china, taiwan and japan. some of the stuff that was made in japan before is also made in taiwan (chinese) or mainland china.
i think stroud uses more than just this
@crockagater cold steel is mainly japanese
@dertnberny i totally agree. this out performed my cold steel SRK when it came to batoning and ease of sharpening. I have abused this thing for years without many problems. but the first log i batoned with my srk the handle came loose. both good knives with the srk coming out on top in a comparison, but i would never under sell this knife by any means.
LMAO. You clearly dont know jack about this knife-first off, it is full tang. Secondly, it is a straight hoss. Thirdly, it does not vibrate your hand when batoning.
Oh and the tip is quite stout.
@crockagater Actually Schrade went bankrupt and the old stock was sold to whoever wanted it. The logo’s for Schrade, Uncle Henry, and Old timers were bought by a company that manufactures exclusively in China, Marbles logo was bought as well and now are made at the same factory in China. If you go to ebay you can still buy original unground blanks for Camillus, Cold steel, Marbles, and Schrade that were sold as box lots from the final auction. I just bought a Cold Steel SRK blank for 20 bucks.
@mem7048 much of cold steel is chinese made as well. schrade, who owns uncle henry and old timer both went there too.
@mem7048 Ah, well ya learn somethin new everyday. Nonetheless, my edc is the Kershaw RAM and I love it. The Sandvik 13c26 steel is very well made and is probably the best steel for edc use ive used yet. I also own both the Buck 119 and the Buck 110 as my camping/hunting blades and they performs excellently, price considered. I got my 119 for $40 at WalMart, showing, even to my own amazement, that it is possible to buy a quality knife from WalMart.
@SheffeyStudios Assembly is done in China, and I would love for you to buy one of their pocket knives that are “made in the USA” as they are all made in China today. Kershaw is the same way now, as is the majority of Gerber.
@mem7048 Buck makes their knives in the US.
@thejackalninja
40$ us = 60$ can ( when you include tax its even 70$can) not the same market here up north
i bought one im no expert here is what i think
- wheight is nice ( i only have another one to compare but about same size /weight)
- sharp (verry ) when you buy it
- dosent have tooths on the back of the blade and has a nice gard that protects your fingers well
what i dont like:
- no lenyard ( holes to put one at least)
- cant be worn elswhere than your belt
-sheeth seams plasticky
- no rubber or anything to gripp well when damp .
overall id say the same buy another knife !
The wal-Mart knives are made in China, and if you file a series of cross grooves into the phenolic it does work well, however you need to re-profile the blade geometry to make it an effective bushcraft knife. I changed the point as well. It is a great go-to knife, or a good beginning bushcraft knife for a novice who wants something recognizable.
got mine for $40, look at walmart, haha
of all people you would think that les stroud would know to use a full tang knife not a half tang
great vid
I have over 20 years experience with the Buck 119. It is my go to blade for deer hunting. And it has never let me down. That being said I agree with you, it’s not the best choice for bushcraft . But if it was the only knife I had, I could make it work.
This knife if ok for hunting, but if you’re looking for a survival knife, I really recommend getting a bushcraft style knife if you want something in the 4.5 inch range, or the Coldsteel Trailmaster, Ka-Bar USMC or Heavy Bowie for a larger survival knife.
@Hobohube
what about the Cold Steel GI Tanto?
ouch$67. buck don’t stop here. Thanks for the review. I want a knife but don’t want to spend alot of $.
never was much into knives just don’t see the thrill in them … But good info Just in case I want to buy one
Sigh. What gave you the idea that the 119 is not a full tang knife? It’s most certainly NOT a half tang knife. It has a full tang that extends to the pommel where it is pinned. The pin is ground and polished flush to the pommel.
You same to make a lot of inferences about how you think the knife will perform without having actually USED it.
Furthermore, you also spent $67 for a Buck 119? You obviously don’t even know where to shop.
Three strikes. Your credibility is zero as far as I’m concerned. Get your facts straight before you display your ignorance on camera.
